James A. Bogans III is a poster child for unconventionality. As an artist, writer, creator, mentor and pastor, James combines each skill he has to share the good news and inspire people to find their purpose & identity through creativity. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, James saw firsthand what an imaginative mind could do for a family. His parents dedicated their lives to moving James and his older brother, Marquise, out of the city of Baltimore and into a better environment. James’ parents were also born and raised in Baltimore and had never seen another city. Still, they imagined a life for their sons that they had not seen with their own eyes. This taught James the power of imagination and the part creativity plays in it.
At the age of 14, James and his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia to this imagined dream by his parents. James developed a love for music, film, literature and poetry early on. The move to Georgia cultivated that love. At 16, a few of his poetry pieces were published. At 17 he began recording and performing music around the city of Atlanta. At 19, he was discovered and put into a group called The Alliance, performing the regional hit song “Tatted Up” featuring Fabo of D4L. One week before signing contracts with the group and Asylum Records under the umbrella of Warner Bros, James and the group's manager had a creative disagreement that would lead James to resign from the group.
Disappointed at a missed opportunity, all wasn’t exactly lost because while in the group, James learned about audio engineering. That led to James starting his own recording studio and a career as a sound technician. Mostly cultivating the sound of independent artists, James also had the privilege of engineering for some of our favorite recording artists of this generation.
During that time, James’ love for literature blossomed as he began editing novels and writing his own under an alias. That opened the door for voiceover work and audiobook production. And that opened the door for him to show his love for film by editing and producing video. James has been a writer for 25 years, an artist for 20 years, an audio engineer for 15 years, a sound technician for 13 years, video producer/editor for 12 years, book editor for 10 years and a public speaker for 7 years. A creative swiss army knife, James believes that art opens up the most beautiful parts of ourselves and the world.
At the top of 2022, James stepped into the unlikely office of becoming a pastor. Already stricken with unconventionality, James would wander into a whole new world of tradition that he'd spend every second breaking for sake of bringing creative believers into a relationship with Christ. He'd share his peculiar story in a book released later on that year entitled "Bad Pastor: Journey of a Creative Believer". Whether he's creating for himself or someone else, it's James' mission to illuminate a path in which creative people can discover the most powerful parts of themselves and their relationship with God. He's recognized as so many things, but at the culmination of it all, James is a creative luminary seeking to change the world.
